As someone who has studied and practiced personal development for over a decade, I’ve come to understand that what often holds us back is our mindset or limiting beliefs.
If we want abundance and prosperity, we must learn to embrace the abundance mindset and shift away from the scarcity mindset.
Let’s dive into what an abundance mindset is and how you can shift to an abundance mindset to have a more prosperous and enjoyable life.
What Is an Abundance Mindset?
An abundance mindset is a perspective in which you believe that unlimited resources and opportunities are always available to you. This doesn’t have to be financial abundance, although that’s typically what people think of when they think about abundance.
But, even in my life, I’ve had zero money and been broke for a month or so at a time, and I’m still abundant in other ways. I have abundant freedom; I get to work from home and homeschool my kids; I have an abundance of beautiful land to grow food on and creeks for my kids to play in; I have an abundance of good health, and the list can go on and on.
It’s all up to you.
But I figure you are interested in financial abundance, so let’s examine how you can adopt an abundant mindset and become prosperous.
Abundance vs Scarcity Mindset
You can either be in an abundance mindset or a scarcity mindset. There are no other choices here. Let’s look at the two mindsets closer.
Abundance Mindset
Having an abundance mindset means that you believe that the opportunities for your growth are endless and plentiful. Resources are plentiful, the sky’s the limit, and so many opportunities are available to you if you are open to them.
An abundance mindset definition involves thinking about the big picture and zooming out from one’s little dot world for a minute. It is all about trusting the unknown and focusing on opportunities and growth.
So, let’s take a look at the opposite of an abundance mindset.
Scarcity Mindset
It’s good practice to be frugal, but if you are not spending money because you are afraid you won’t have enough to fill-in-the-blank, then you may be coming from a scarcity mindset.
With scarcity, your future is constricted.
Scarcity causes you to think too small, and therefore, you hold yourself back. Scarcity is survival mode. Scarcity is fear-based.
“I can’t afford to get a new TV because then we won’t be able to pay the property taxes”.
Scarcity is focused on the cost of everything instead of focusing on opportunities for growth.
Let’s say you have a small business, and there’s a course that you know will help you scale it, but it costs $1000. Scarcity tells you that you can’t afford to take the class, so you skip it.
However, an abundance mindset will tell you to go for it because this investment will lead to three times the business growth, but you must take the risk.
How To Develop an Abundance Mindset in 10 Easy-To-Implement Ways
If you find yourself stuck in a scarcity mindset, don’t worry—you’re not alone. But today, you have the power to change that. Let’s explore ten simple yet powerful ways that can help you shift to an abundance mindset right now!
1. Practice Gratitude
Gratitude is the quickest route to abundance. It would help if you created a gratitude practice that you can do daily. You can either start a gratitude journal or start your day by saying three things that you are grateful for each morning.
Gratitude is the key to an abundance mindset. If you learn to appreciate everything you have and know that you have enough, you will attract more.
2. Identify Blocks
So, one of the most important things to do when you are on your abundance mindset journey is to identify any subconscious blocks to abundance.
These are going to be your resistance to abundance.
It could be that you took a poverty vow or you have a poverty mentality. Maybe you grew up with money, but your parents acted like you didn’t have it, and it was hard to come by. These are simply not true, but they could be blocking you from your abundance.
Begin by imagining your life full of abundance. What does it look like? Eventually, some negative things will come up and mess up your pretty story. These are going to be some of your subconscious blocks.
Once you identify your blocks, you can replace them with more positive abundance mindset beliefs. You can do this with positive affirmations, visualizations, or incantations.
3. Watch Your Thoughts and Words
Your thoughts and words become your reality. So, it is essential to watch your thoughts and words closely when you are trying to maintain an abundance mindset.
While I know you can’t control every little thought that creeps in, you can get better at not dwelling on them. So, if a negative thought comes into your head, don’t give it a second thought. Just say no, that’s wrong, inner critic or wherever the idea comes from, and switch it out for something more positive and conducive to your abundance mindset.
4. Focus On What You Want, Not What You Don’t Have
Are you focusing on what you don’t have? Ahh! It’s not your fault. The media has programmed this through fear and other tactics to make you think there is a limited amount of money, air, water, food, or whatever, but that is not the case.
The Earth has an abundance of everything!
All you have to do is stop focusing on what you don’t have.
Instead, you want to focus on what you want. See, energy goes where attention goes, so if you need to think that you don’t have enough money to get a new car, then that’s the experience you will have because that will be what is magnetized back to you.
So, stop doing that.
Focus on what you want, but don’t focus too hard.
State your desire, then forget about it, move on, and find something else to do. If you focus too hard on it, you may come from a place of lack of scarcity again and mess it all up.
5. Eliminate Scarcity Mindset
To have an abundance mindset, you must eliminate all aspects of the scarcity mindset. A scarcity mindset can hold you back in so many ways. It’s like you will hit a ceiling, and you can’t make any more money than that ceiling.
So, for example, you get $4,000 in your savings account, and then something breaks down or needs to be replaced in your car. It’s like the Universe is conspiring to keep you at a $4,000 limit, right?
Well, it’s the scarcity mindset.
Do not give up, and do not compare yourself to others. Your journey will not look like anyone else’s; when you do that, you shoot your abundance mindset right in the foot.
It’s all about risk, baby. Instead of thinking I’m not ready, play the Fool card and dive into the unknown. That’s where the magic of an abundance mindset lights up in your life.
6. Work on Limiting Beliefs
One of the toughest things to do, I think, when it comes to trying to have an abundance mindset is to work on our limiting beliefs. Some of these beliefs have been ingrained into us since early childhood and, therefore, are difficult to change and rewire.
But the good news is that you can do it! The key is to determine what your limiting beliefs are about money and abundance and then change them.
You may even have some limiting beliefs that have been passed down through your DNA from your ancestors. In this case, I recommend trying energy work that resonates with you to release them.
7. Try Breathing Techniques
One of the best ways to cultivate an abundance mindset is to get yourself into a parasympathetic state.
My favorite way to do this is with breathing exercises. My favorite breathing exercise is easy; anyone can try it called “Box Breathing.”
Box breathing is often called 4×4 breathing or square breathing. Essentially, you inhale for four seconds, hold for four, exhale for four, then hold for four again, and repeat for a few minutes. This style of breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system. When we want to be in a flow state, we want to be in this state. The opposite state is fight or flight; you can’t bring in abundance when you are in that state of survival and stress.
When you learn how to get your body into a parasympathetic and relaxed state, you will be able to cultivate an abundance mindset.
8. Make Friends With Your Money
If you want to have an abundance mindset, you must change how you interact with and treat your money.
Some people simply don’t have a very loving relationship with money. So, if you are the type to hoard money out of lack or greed, then you need to change your relationship with money.
Become money’s best friend. Show your money that you love, respect it, and want it to stick around more.
It sounds funny, but when we approach money like a friend, we say to the Universe, ” Hey, I appreciate and want to love my money, so I’m good to have more of it.
Hoarding money and being greedy differ from the frequency you want to have around your money if you are looking for abundance.
9. Be Generous
One of the best ways to begin cultivating an abundance mindset is to become generous. You can donate things that you no longer need. By donating clutter, you are opening more room for abundance to come in.
Plus, being generous just feels awesome, and it is similar to the frequency of gratitude. So, when you are feeling generous with your time or your money, you are paving the way for your abundance mindset to stay and hang out.
10. Surrender
On your path to having an abundance mindset, it’s best to just surrender. Some people will tell you to come up with your intention for abundance and then listen to subliminals and positive affirmations, draw vision boards, and repeat incantations all day long. I tend to see it differently than the mainstream.
Instead, you need to state your intention to the Universe and surrender it to God, the Universe, Source, or whatever power you call greater than yourself.
Instead of focusing on abundance all day, every day, let it go to your higher power.
This way, it’s like you put your order in and then let it go for something greater than yourself to come up with a plan or path. From my experience, everything I’ve held onto to try and control myself has always ended up in a flop.
Instead, when I surrender it to God, what I want miraculously, and creativity starts to show up through a strange case of synchronicities and events that I could never have come up with. That’s another thing: stop manifesting and start synching up with Source to get what you want by surrendering it over.
